Do Peloton Bikes Need To Be Plugged In? Everything you need to know

Peloton is a brand that has been taking the fitness world by storm. With top-of-the-line equipment, a rich library of over 10,000 classes and a supportive community of riders, it’s no wonder why people love their Pelotons.

One question that comes up from time to time is whether or not you need an electrical output to use a Peloton bike. Or do they come with chargers, so you take your Peloton bike outside and cycle in the fresh air?

Do Peloton Bikes Need To Be Plugged In?

The Peloton bike must be plugged into the electrical socket to use the Peloton interactive screen. However, you can use the Peloton bike like a regular spin bike without plugging it in if you want to do your own ride without the need for the screen.

The power cable itself is approximately 3m in length, making it more than long enough to go from the plug socket to where you position your bike in the room of your choice. However, if you have a larger room or your bike is in the garage or basement, and you have a lack of power outlets, you could always use an extension cable to provide extra length, here an article that describes if you need a extension cord for you Peloton Bike..

Furthermore, I like to protect my peloton bike monitor from power surges; therefore, I only plug the bike directly into the power socket. However, if I need to utilise an extension cable, I would advise using one with a power surge protector to prevent the screen from being damaged. Click here to find the one I use from Amazon.

Furthermore, this surge protector has a 6ft cord, so you can place your Peloton further away from the socket. Is It OK To Unplug My Peloton Bike?

You can unplug your Peloton bike and switch off the power after you have used the bike. If you are frequently cycling your Peloton bike at least three times per week, there’s no reason to leave your Peloton bike switched on all the time.

However, it is recommended that you turn on your Peloton bike at least once a week for the system to complete its updates if you’re not cycling it regularly.

My recommendation and what I do is switch on the bike when I’m cycling, generally 30 minutes before a ride. That way, if the bike requires a system update, it will be finished by the time I get to my ride. Typically I find that most updates are done within five minutes.

Therefore by the time you get your shoes, your water and anything else ready, the update will generally be complete. But, if the bike requires an update, it doesn’t need to be done immediately. You can finish your ride first and then complete the update after your ride.

If you’re going on vacation or holiday for several weeks, switch off your Peloton bike entirely and when you return, turn it on the night before you want to get back on the bike and let the Peloton perform all its updates overnight.

Does Peloton Bikes Use Electricity?

Both versions of the Peloton bike use electricity to power the monitor for the Peloton classes. The original Peloton bike uses 16 watts for a 30-minute ride, costing approximately $0.22 (£0.16) a day. The Peloton bike + uses 26 watts for a 30-minute ride at the cost of $0.35 (£0.26) every day.

Now, let’s assume that you are cycling your Peloton bike for 30 minutes 365 days a year. The monitor will use 16 watts of power, and it will cost you approximately $73 (£55) for the entire year to power your Peloton bike. But you must switch off your Pelton bike after every ride because it uses 5 watts of power when the bike is on standby.

If you leave your Peloton bike on standby and never switch it off, it will cost you an extra $0.13 (£0.10) every hour. That’s approximately $124 (£92) a year to keep your Peloton on standby.

For the Peloton bike + cycling for 30 minutes 365 days a year. The monitor will use 26 watts of power, and it will cost you approximately $94 (£69) for the entire year to power your Peloton bike +.

Peloton Power Cord Replacement

[amazon table=”1586″]

The original Peloton bike and Peloton bike + use a 12v power cord, and you can find replacement direct from Peloton or Amazon. My recommendation is here

The power cord connector that inserts into the Peloton bike has a flat surface. Therefore, make sure you select the correct type of power cord, or the end of the cable won’t fit into the bike.

The typical Peloton bike user will have to replace the power cord every 3 to 4 years if the bike is used regularly. However, there are times when we misplace our power cord, or we’ve been moving, and we can’t locate it.

Moreover, you may have bought yourself a Peloton bike secondhand, and the power cord has been lost, and you need to replace it. My advice is always to check the retailer before you purchase any electrical devices, and if you’re unsure, always plug into a power surge protector to stop too much electric current from being flawed into the monitor and causing damage.

Does The Peloton Bike Have A Battery?

The Peloton bike doesn’t include a separate battery pack that can be used without electricity. The Peloton bike comes with a 12v power cord, which is required to power the monitor. The Peloton monitor does not have the facility to be charged and disconnected from the power socket during a ride.

Unfortunately, this means you have to be close to a power outlet to use your Peloton bike with the interactive classes. The Peloton bike is easy to move around because it comes with small wheels on the front legs. So, you can store your bike away and take it out and position it near a power outlet to complete your workout.
