Before you begin cleaning your Peloton mat, it’s recommended to remove your Peloton bike from the mat so you can clean the entire area. The weight of the Peloton creates indentations into your mat, and this is where the bulk of the sweat and grime will be.
Step 1: Fill approximately 3/4 of the bottle with water using your plastic spray bottle. The water doesn’t have to be warm because you can save the solution for next time. But to purify the water, I like to boil the water then allow it to cool down before putting it in the spray bottle.
Step 2: Add 1/4 of the distilled white vinegar to the water in the spray bottle. Vinegar is fantastic for cleaning dirt, grime and sweat, and it won’t break down or degrade your rubber mat. Don’t worry, your mat won’t smell of the vinegar, the solution is well diluted.
Step 3: Add 2 drops of an essential oil like tea tree or lavender to the water and vinegar solution in your spray bottle. Essential oils have antibacterial properties, and it helps to remove any unpleasant smells on your Peloton mat.
Step 4: Spray the entire mat with a light wetting of the cleaning solution and then use kitchen roll to remove the dirt and sweat. Leave the mat to dry for 30-minutes and return your Peloton to the mat.

Don’t Use Soap on Your Peloton Mat
Don’t use soap and water to clean your Peloton mat for daily cleaning because it can be slippy and harder to clean. The soap doesn’t provide a suitable cleaning solution for sweat on your mat. Instead, it creates a gunky layer that becomes harder to remove with paper towels. You will notice it attracts more dirt and dust this way.
Deep Clean your Peloton Mat
However, if you’re going to do a deep clean of your Peloton mat, which is advised every month, then soap and warm water are options. I like to take my mat to the bath and use the showerhead to rinse and clean the mat. I use a gym mat cleaner that kills all bacteria and removes dirt (link here).
I submerge the Peloton mat under the water and give it a good scrub using a smooth pad. Once the mat has been thoroughly cleaned, I rinse with cold water and dry it for several hours. I hang it straight so it can dry without causing the mat to kink or bend.
Avoid Boiling Water on The Peloton Mat
Never directly put boiling water onto your Peloton mat because the heat will damage your rubber mat. You can boil the water then allow it to cool down, which removes any bacteria in the water. Additionally, avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or disinfectant because they will also damage and discolour your Peloton mat.
I made a mistake in cleaning my Peloton mat with a mop and bucket with a boiling water solution and floor cleaner. After a few weeks, I noticed the mat was breaking, and the rubber was following away. Most household cleaning solutions react with rubber and make them weak and brittle. Therefore, it’s always best to buy a gym cleaning solution to prevent your equipment from being damaged.

However, my wife and I share a Peloton bike, and in general, we ride after each other. Therefore, I give the handlebars and seat a quick wipe with a baby wipe and then once we have both finished our Peloton workouts for the day, I use the cleaning wipes to clean the Peloton and mat thoroughly.
Can I Use Baby Wipes To Clean My Peloton Mat?
In general, baby wipes are a great way to clean your Peloton and mat because they don’t contain any hard chemicals that will damage your equipment. However, most baby wipes are scent-free, so you might need to use an essential oil to remove the smell of sweat from your Peloton equipment.
